YAOUNDE, August 21 (Xinhua) — On Saturday, a Chinese medical team in Cameroon provided free healthcare to the people of Ngat-Bane, a village in the Central district of the capital, Yaounde.

Early in the morning, more than a hundred villagers gathered at the Ngat-Bane Health Center, about 40 km from China. On the outskirts of Yaounde.

Among them was 63-year-old Richard Mekoga, who came from a neighboring village. Mekoga said she suffers from back pain, eye and nerve problems.

“This is my first time participating in the (Chinese) health campaign. I am extremely pleased with the way we were received,” Mekoga said.

Ngat-Bane, like many other Cameroonian villages, has abundant wildlife and scattered thatched huts, but zero hospitals. Villagers often suffer from health problems such as rheumatism, typhoid fever and malaria, but many cannot afford medical services in Mbalmayo.

“This (free consultation and treatment in Chinese) relieves those of us who do not have enough means and cannot even travel to Mbalmayo (for treatment),” said Joseph Mbede Onambele, 70, who suffers from inflammation. He travels to Mbalmayo to seek medical treatment on his limbs and sometimes from the Chinese health workers who work there.

The mayor of Mbalmayo, Dieudonne Zang Mba Obele, estimates that 70 percent of those who receive free treatment are women and children.

“I believe this is an example of cooperation (between Cameroon and China). They (Chinese health workers) are not just for the Mbalmayo district hospital, but also for the poorest population who can’t go to Mbalmayo hospital, sometimes they don’t have the facilities, lack of infrastructure,” Obele said.

As part of the campaign, the Chinese medical team donated medical supplies.
